Rs 30 lakh in gold, cash looted from Margao flat

Rs 30 lakh in gold, cash looted from Margao flat
TNN | Feb 22, 2013, 07.28AM IST
MARGAO: In a daylight robbery, unidentified persons broke into a third floor flat owned by Banca da Gama in a building located near the Colva circle, Margao, on Thursday, and decamped with cash and gold ornaments worth nearly 30 lakh

The robbery is believed to have occurred between the morning hours and afternoon when there were no occupants in the house.

The incident came to light only at around 4.30pm when Gama returned home. She had gone to her sister's residence at Ambora, Raia, on Thursday morning.

"When she came back she found the door of her flat broken open and the flat ransacked," police sources said.

Gold ornaments and cash, both Indian and foreign currency, all worth nearly 30 lakh have gone missing from the cupboards, Gama has stated in her complaint. The cupboards were not locked which made the task easier for the robbers, police said.

A sniffer dog squad was pressed into service but no clues could be obtained.

Margao town police have booked an offence against unknown persons and further investigations are under way.

Gama stays in Dubai and had come down to Goa recently, police sources said.

Police suspect the same gang of thieves that have struck a number of places in Margao recently, as the modus operandi in this case and the other ones appears similar.

Advantages of Security Systems at Schools in Goa

Advantages of Security Systems at Schools in Goa

There are many important reasons why schools have a definite necessity in having security systems installed throughout school grounds. Security systems prevent issues such as: vandalism, bullying, criminal activity and sexual predators. Up until recently, many schools had CCTV security systems installed throughout outdoor play areas, Classrooms, Office area, and hallways to mainly prevent and monitor vandalism. It turns out that cameras can prevent and monitor many other problematic issues.
Vandalism on school properties have been an issue for many years and school budgets have been applied in order to purchase and install security systems to minimize damage. The installation and use of security cameras have been proven to minimize vandalism, either by catching the perpetrator or deterring such activities from occurring in the first place.
Surveillance cameras have become essential in monitoring and preventing bullying as well. Bullying has always been an important issue in schools, but only recently has it become recognized as part of the school's responsibility to monitor and discourage such activities. The Sunrise news station, which is located in Sydney Australia, reported a decrease in school bullying after cameras were installed to prevent vandalism (see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSgqR49ijMs ).
Schools that have been investing their money on CCTV security camera systems are reassuring for many parents. A school willing to invest their money in security systems ensures that the general safety and security of their children are being addressed during schools hours, including after-school extracurricular activities and programs.
An important issue that has been overlooked many times are sexual predators. One of the biggest threats that school children face is the threat of sexual predators and pedophiles hanging around unobtrusively on school campuses or in parking lots. Camera system footages are very useful in tracking down predators or helping inform police about threatening situations in real time.
Criminal activity is also a problem occurring on school property and during school operating hours. Drugs being dealt on school grounds have been a highly problematic issue for many years. The presence of highly visible surveillance cameras at strategic locations, such as buildings and public areas/ school property premises, can prevent the dealing and usage of smoking ,drugs and alcohol and. It is foremost a deterrent and of course a tool in apprehending those involved in such criminal activity and removing them from school grounds.
School security personnel monitoring the screens and viewing security camera positions can take real-time action in notifying law enforcement and evacuating children, faculty, and staff in case of emergencies, such as fires or other dangerous situations. The shocking event of Rape Case in Vasco is example of non existence of CCTV. The most popular cameras used by schools are PTZ (Pan Tilt Zoom) Cameras. They are ideal for real time monitoring and can cover 360 degrees.

School principals turn to CCTV cameras to maintain discipline
Posted online: Fri Aug 19 2011, 03:35 hrs

Chandigarh : With infrastructure increasing in most of Chandigarh's private schools, principals have found it difficult to monitor activities both inside and outside the classrooms. To solve the problem schools have now turned to CCTV cameras which are connected to Digital Video Recorder (DVR) systems, that now enable principals to keep a tab on everything from their offices. Over the past year, the CCTV cameras have become a common feature in nearly 55 of the total 63 private schools in the city. They are primarily installed in corridors, classrooms, playgrounds, library, reception hall, laboratories and the entry gate.
For the principals the cameras have emerged as an effective tool in ensuring discipline, as they feel that the cameras create a psychological impact of 'being under surveillance' not only among students but teachers and non-teaching staff.
Sanjay Sardana, Director of Manav Mangal group of Schools told Newsline: "The principal cannot be present everywhere all the time. But the cameras have done away with this limitation since everyone in the school, especially the students, gets a sense of being under surveillance and hence maintain discipline".
Additionally, the DVR allows authorities to review events that have occurred over the previous seven days. This allows school heads to investigate complaints of bullying, misconduct or scuffles among students or even teachers by reviewing the stored footage.
"In case the principal is not in the office, she can always view the previous days happenings. To look into the complaints, the principal can make use of the recorder in finding out that what went wrong. This way the system allows a fool proof inspection," said Punita Singh, counsellor at Carmel Convent School, Sector 9.
In some of the schools, the cameras are installed in the principal's room as well. "Apart from keeping an eye on the happenings in the different parts of the school, the basic purpose of installing these cameras is also to keep a check on those who come and meet us, " said a school principal.
While most of the schools state the parents of students share a consent with them in reviewing the students through the cameras, they also agree that enough consideration has to be made to ensure that the surveillance system does not get interpreted as an intrusion into the freedom of students or teachers at the school.
"Time and again we need to take feedback from teachers and students in order to make sure they do not feel restricted due to the camera being there over their heads all the time," said Sardana. On an average, each of the schools have installed a total of 90 cameras with each camera costing between Rs 8,000 to 10,000.

Banks told to install note sorting machines

Banks told to install note sorting machines

LUCKNOW: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has directed nationalised and cooperative banks in the state to install note sorting machines for detection of counterfeit currency notes and preventing their re-issue.
"RBI had given direction to this effect in 2009. But many banks are yet to implement it. We have stressed on it again and banks have been told to install the note sorting machines at the earliest," Alpana, head of communications, RBI, told reporters on Friday. A note sorting machine identifies the notes that are suspected to be fake. She, however, did not state if any deadline has been fixed for the installation of machines.
Counterfeit currency poses a major challenge to the RBI. In 2009, the number of fake pieces were 4,01,476 as compared to 4,35,607 pieces in 2010, an increase of 34,131 fake pieces. The circulation of fake currency has increased in Uttar Pradesh. RBI statistics show that in 2011-2012, out of 60 crore pieces, seven fake pieces were each in Rs 10 and 20 notes, 798 pieces in Rs 50 notes, 1656 pieces in Rs 100 notes where as 451 pieces were in Rs 500 note and 92 pieces in Rs 1000 notes.
In another public interest initiative, the RBI has come up with a procedure to help businessmen who need 'change' for their financial transactions. "The association head is required to inform RBI about the amount of change needed and after receiving the money he distributes it to the retailers," added Alpana.
